The Best Spent $25

This past Thursday, I headed to a promising estate sale that claimed to have tons of vintage clothing, accessories and housewares. I got to the sale a little more than an hour after it opened, since I wasn't in the mood to compete with dealers and resellers. I don't know how sales are where you live, but here in MI, the first hour of a sale can be complete chaos. Estate saling really is an extreme sport!

Anyway, I was pleased to discover that the two lucite bags were still available when I got there. I was really surprised, because at only $22 I was sure someone would have snatched these up... apparently not. I thought the price was great and especially since this bag is for my own collection, it was quite the deal. The other bag had a broken handle and the company still wanted $22 for it. The man running the sale tried to convince me that "a little super glue will fix that right up," ummm.... yeah, sure....

I loved the detailing on the top and its honeycomb shape. I also liked that it was marked at the bottom. My other two lucite bags are unmarked. I am thinking that this bag might have been in one of the cheaper lines, since the plastic is thinner and the handle is a bit less sturdy that my other two bags. Regardless, I was thrilled to added another bag to my collection, as they are not easy to find here in MI and have had to rely on the Internet to find my other two.

When I first walked into the sale, which was still in full chaos mode, I checked out the jewelry table and came across these two bangles. I was pretty sure they were bakelite and were the only two bakelite pieces amongst the jewelry. They didn't however have a price tag and I feared that they would be like $15 or $20 each, which is a little high for my taste. Hoping for the best, I continued to clutch these while I shopped the rest of the sale. Much of the vintage clothing was in kinda rough shape and priced too high, but I did find a few pieces for a festival I am selling at this weekend. I also found the cutest little owl light for only $3.

So, when I finally reached the check out, I got a price for the bracelets.... "how does $3 for both sound?" SOLD!! WHen I got home, I checked he bracelets with my semichrome and they passed! Yay!!! :)

This was really some of the best $25 I have spent in a long while.

Have you found any good deals lately?

Some Estate Sale Goodies

It's seems that I have sort of a backlog of photos to share with you all. These past two weekends were filled with many wonderful estate sales that bought me many new treasures. The items pictured in this post were found two weekends ago. Later this week, I will show you what I found this past weekend.

Above is a cute little birdie print that I found for 50 cents. I just love birds and sort of have a collection going now. All the other finds pictured came from the same sale. My beau and I drove about an hour from where we live to attend this farmhouse sale that was packed with tons of vintage stuff. Not too many clothes though..... I did find a few pieces, but they were in pretty bad shape. I took a few dresses home with me to save and give a second lease on life.

I did, however, come across these ivory colored plastic dress clips. I doubt if they are actually ivory, but the plastic is weird. It's not bakelite, maybe celluloid? I haven't tested it yet, but the carved necklace seems like bakelite; whatever it is, I love it!! The discolored beads looks worse in the photo than they are in life.

I am not normally one for knick knacks or figurines (minus my Asian guys of course!), but this little birdie caught my eye. He's really small, about an inch or two, but isn't he cute? I don't know if I am going to keep the little doe or not, but he was too sweet to pass up for only 50 cents.
I think my absolute favorite find at this sale was Sterling Silver "E" pin. I love initial pins and having a name that starts with a vowel can tend to be hard to find. I think that "E" items are a bit on the easier side to find, since names like Evelyn and Ellen were popular back in the day. My grandma on my dad's side name was Evelyn and my Great Grandma on my mom's side name was also Evelyn (she was born in the late 1890's!). Anyways, I love this pin and gladly forked over $8 for it, a price I normally wouldn't pay for a simple pin at an estate sale. The paper its pictured on is some sort of templates that you paste on envelopes. I thought it was really interesting and would be fun to scan in and use the images.

What have you been finding?

Emily

P.S. I had a request for a close up of my scottie pin from yesterday, which lead me to the idea to share all of my bakelite. I'll do a post about that sometime next week.

Oriental Figurines

First off, YAY!!! Thank you followers and readers for helping me reach 200!!! The giveaway will be up tomorrow, so check back in to enter! I appreciate each and everyone of you!!! :)

Now, on to these fabulous little figurines!! So, I LOVE chalkware. I have a collection of chalkware fruits that I am going to decorate my kitchen with and am such a sucker for it. I also have been on the look out for some cute vintage figurines, hoping that I would find some that would fit with this lamp that I won from Mary Deluxe. Two weekends ago, imagine my excitement when I found those cuties above for only $3 at an estate sale!! How had no one snapped them up?! I love how their legs dangle. They will be finding a home in my office on the bookshelf.

Then, almost a week after the estate sale, on one of my weekly Thursday trips to the Salvation Army (they off discounts for students on Thursdays, if you are a student, this is a great day to go!) I found these dearies, again, for only $3. Now, these guys are not in as good of condition as the ones above, however, with a little paint, they will be like new again. I won't feel guilty about painting these guys because their previous owner glued a chipped off piece back in. I am all about preserving things, but these little guys are going to be just for fun. They have since found a home on my bookshelf at home.

Now, fast forward to last weekend. My beau and I were scoping out the spoils at an estate sale, when we met up from "dividing and conquering" and low and behold, my beau had spotted this guy hanging out in the basement. I could not believe my luck in finding all these awesome vintage chalkware Oriental figurines in the short time of two and half weeks! This guy, also not in perfect condition, was $2; a bit pricer than my other finds, but welcomed just the same. I think I am all set on my Oriental figurine collection...... for now at least! :)

Remember, tomorrow is the giveaway!!!!!! :)

Vintage Twins

Last week I attended an estate sale what was FULL of vintage costume jewelry. The entire front room of the sale was jam packed with boxes and tables of rhinestones and anything that sparkles. I picked up a lot of great pieces, including a pair of yellow bakelite carved hoop earrings for $3. My favorite find would have to be these scatter pins which are an exact match to these earrings from my grandma. I also found a pair of costume earrings that were twins of a pair I bought from Lana Turner's daughter. I left those for someone else to find and treasure, but it was so cool to discover so many vintage twins at this sale. I have occasionally come across the same dress, but that is VERY few and far between. Have you ever found a vintage twin out there to something you already own?

My Weekend Uniform

These last few weeks of summer have been keeping me super busy and away from my computer. Since I did not have any classes this summer to take, I have really taken advantage of enjoying a lazy school free summer.

This past weekend was jam packed with lost of estate sale shopping and a trip to Eastern Market, a large farmers market in Detroit. I didn't find anything too spectacular at the estate sales, but the beau did score a really awesome hanging lamp that drips oil. Now we just need to figure out how to make it work..... make the oil start dripping again, that is.

The weekend also gave me a chance to wear my new Swirl, which I got on eBay for the large sum of $5 with shipping included!!! The top is a little faded and there are a few speckles of paint, but it was a great price and is perfect for estate sales and flea markets; for when I want to dress vintage but not have to worry about ruining my vintage clothing. Plus I have having pockets so I don't need to carry a purse around everywhere.

Digger Sale Favorites

This week has just flown by! I was planning on posting this earlier this week and am just now getting around to it...it must be all the nicer weather we have been experiencing here. Anyways, here are nine of my favorite finds from the digger sale I attended last weekend. I wanted to include the 40's satin coverlet and barkcloth drapes, however they are at the dry cleaners. They would have been my top two! :)

1. This was the first thing I spotted at the sale. It's a great table cloth, I think it was only used once. I just love yellow and pineapples!!

2. I have been wanting one of these aprons for a long time and found it underneath a ton of clothes. It was all crumpled up and had tons of stains, but I got most of them out. Isn't this so cute?

3. I couldn't believe that there was four whole yards of the pink fabric with the white sunflowers. I am either going to make a two piece dress or play suit with it. Any thoughts? The green piece with flower boarder looked like a flour sack but had a drawstring around the top like a skirt would have. Regardless what it was originally used for, I bought it to turn it into curtains.
4. This was the first item I spotted when I started to shop downstairs after I collected as much of the vintage clothes left as I could. I don't know if that blue thing is suppose to be for sunglasses, but that's how I found it, with the sunglasses in it. Does anyone know what it used for?

5. I pretty much cleaned out the jewelry that was left. I loved the trench art pin. I think my mom might end up with it because her name starts with an A. I don't know if you can see that little star, but it dangles!! I also snatched up that Navy inspired plastic necklace. It is going to look nice with my Navy pants I got a while back.

6. That's pretty much the rest of the jewelry I picked up. The lady who lived in the home worked for Hudson's (Macys) during the 40s through the 60s and never passed up a sale. Many items were new old stock. This was the case with those cute twin birdie brooches. The earrings sparkle soooo much!! And can you see the WWII sterling silver forget-me-not bracelet? It needs a few more links, but I was super excited about finding that!
7. This would probably have to be my favorite find clothing wise. I have been looking for a pair of vintage shorts and these just need a new zipper. I was really thrilled that I found a matching blouse at the sale.

8. This is the purse that took to the vintage clothing expo, which I received many compliments on. :) It is a great little bag, with a great combination of the straw and pearlized Lucite. It was practically brand new, just needed some freshening up. It's already a spring favorite!

9. This is hands down my favorite find of the day!!! I have been on the lookout for a vintage clock for my room. This one just needed a new cord and it started ticking away, thanks to my dad for replacing the cord. It also lights up!!! I'm already enjoying it and it keeps excellent time!!

Hope you all find some lovely sales this weekend!!

A Lazy Day Outfit

Today, my mom and I are attending this vintage clothing and jewelry expo and I am soooooo excited!! :) I have been saving my money for weeks now and can't wait to see what the show has to offer. I'll post an update with any finds!

Anyways, I wanted to share this outfit I wore the other day when I was running a few errands. The top is really blousy, I think it might even be a vintage maternity top, but I love it just the same. I didn't want to get lost in the top, so I paired it with a belt and it gave it kinda a peplum effect, which makes me think I could get away with doing this to other vintage maternity tops. I always find them for so cheap and always pass them up because I not at that stage in my life yet. Any thoughts?

Oh... and I also went to this super packed digger sale yesterday and found lots of great stuff. Look for a post on this too! I was so happy yesterday -- this sale was crazy good!

Estate Sales For Beginners

Recently, I have had a few inquiries for some advice for attending estate sales when you are starting out. I thought this was a great idea for a post, so here are some tips.

***I just want to say in advance, I am by no means an expert. The tips I am sharing are just some things I have learned over the past few years I have been attending estate sales.***

Some Terms To Know

*Street Numbers*
These are numbers that either the first person at the sale or the company holding the sale itself provides for attendees to keep order in line. This allows for people to take a number and not be forced to stand in line to keep your place. While this is great for days when it snows and is cold outside, some companies do not like the idea of people getting to the sale the night before and passing out numbers only to have people get their spot in line and return home or go out and grab a coffee. That is why some sales do not allow street numbers.

*Tag Sale*
I know in Michigan, most sales are never labeled as a "tag sale," but I know other states call their estate sales, tag sales. This term is hard to define as just one thing, so I am sure it depends on what area you live in. Some people might consider a garage sale a tag sale, so make sure you do your homework before the sale. Estatesales.net interchanges tag sale with estate sale, so it may be in your best interest to call ahead of time to double check.

*Digger Sale*
If a sale is advertised as a "digger sale" this means that many of the items will probably NOT be priced. This can be a good thing and a bad thing. Most of time you get a price for how much you buy more so than what you buy, i.e. the more you buy the better the price. Digger sales can be fun, if you like to investigate things and be a bit nosey in some else's home. They can get pretty dirty, as most of the stuff has been in storage for years and many companies recommend you bring along a flashlight. A flashlight can be helpful when you are in basements, garages, and attics even if it isn't a digger sale.

*Everything Must Go Sale*
In my experience, these sales have been quickly put together and don't last as long as regular estates sales. Because these sales must clear out everything, they are more likely to accept offers for their customers and will be more inclined to take a lower offer if you are paying in cash. If a sale is advertised as everything must go, be ready to wheel and deal with the people running the sale!

*Bag Sale*
This normally happens on the last day of a sale. The company running the sale will sell bags for a certain amount, most commonly $5, and allow you to fill the bag for that flat rate. Pay attention to what areas the home are allowed in the bag sale because sometimes the company will only allow you to take items from certain rooms. I have gotten a lot of awesome deals at bag sales. So don't think just because it's the last day there won't be anything left. A lot of the over priced sales in my area do bag sales, which means that a lot of good merchandise is still left because of high prices.

Some Basic Tips For Beginners

*How an Estate Sale Works*
An estate sale normally happens when someone has passed away and the family need to clean out the home for sale or to pass onto someone else. Estate sales can start anytime in the week, but most commonly start on a Thursday or Friday and continue on into the weekend. While not all companies accept street numbers, most do. In my opinion, it really makes sales run more smoothly, especially if there is a lot of great vintage stuff there and has drawn a large crowd. Anyways, street numbers are normally only done on the first day of the sale, when there are likely to be the most people. Most sales only let a select number of people inside a sale at a time (this is most prevalent on the firsts and last days when there are the most people).

Once inside the sale, many companies have lists posted on the walls that outlines how much everything costs. This allows for them to put a flat price on common items such as plates and glasses and take more time to price out the more special items.

Most companies will not barter on the first day, although don't be shy. If an item is stained or missing a piece and you feel it's too high, just ask if they could do any better. If you are buying a lot of stuff, they might just knock a dollar or two off.

A lot of people like to bring their own reusable shopping bags with them. Some companies don't allow this, so if you aren't sure, it might be a good idea to call and check. I normally only bring bags to sales I know I am going to buy a lot at. It makes it easier to tote everything around the sale without having to say every five seconds, "That pile is mine."

Keep in mind that if you put something down, it's out of your hands. I have been known to carry stuff around with me until I am done with looking at the whole sale and then evaluate what exactly I want to purchase. It never hurts to hold onto it because once you set it down, you can't claim it.

Also keep in mind that people at these sales are very competitive and can be vicious. Now, not all people are like this, but you may experience someone just grabbing everything and not giving others a chance. You really have to be assertive and avoid being too shy. If you really want something you see, make sure you make your way to it, because that lady grabbing everything in sight is not caring what others think of her, she's there to get what she wants.

Make sure when buying clothing you check for stains and holes. I always hold my garments up into the light to check for holes. It's the easiest way to find the tiny little moths holes that you may not notice until you get home. When buying glassware, I normally carefully run my fingers along the edges to feel for chips.

It's a good idea to bring a flashlight and be prepared to use cash as your main method of payment. Some companies allow checks (mostly instate with an ID) or credit cards over a certain amount of money. Some even charge a 3-5% fee for using the card.

*Where to Find Sales*
The internet is one of the best places to find estate sales. I mainly use Estatesales.net, but will occasionally check craigslist.org. Estatesales.net is a site dedicated to estate sale listings. Companies have to pay to get their sale advertised and most of the listings contain pictures and details about the items at the sale. In my opinion, this is the best place to search for an estate sale because of how much detail is in each listing. You can also go directly to a company's website to find out when their next sale is. You may also be able to find sales by looking in the news paper.

*Get to Know the Companies*
I can't stress enough how beneficial it can be to get to know your local estate sale companies. I have a mental list of the different companies in my area and how their pricing ranks. This can be helpful when you are deciding between two different sales that begin on the same day. I normally go to the company's sale that is priced cheaper first and then will go to the higher priced sale later in the day or week. It also helps to know which companies are more inclined to bargain with you and which sales take which forms of payment. The sales listed on Estatesales.net normally state whether or not they accept check or credit cards and if they accept street numbers. Knowing your companies can also help when it comes to bag sales and last day discounts. Companies don't always advertise these, so being a frequent customer will help you get a feel for how much they discount on the days following the first day and if they hold a bag sale. Some companies also only deal with certain kinds of estates. I know there is one company in my area that does mostly contemporary stuff, so I tend to by pass their sales.

*The Early Bird Get the Worm*
Just as in any other avenue of vintage shopping, being early pays off. Bigger sales, the ones that have tons and tons of vintage items, are going to draw in tons of people. There are a few tricks to these sales, in my opinion anyway. I first evaluate the sale -- is it one I am willing to wake up super early for? Is there enough vintage stuff that I am into? Is it a company with good prices? Those types of questions. If the answers are yes, then I will attend the sale on the first day and try be as close to the front of the line as possible. If it's a company that normally charges more money than I am willing to pay, I won't go unto the second or last day. That way I won't feel bad about missing out on something. Now, if it's a sale I just have to go to, I make sure I get their really early. Sometimes I will drive by the night before and see if someone is passing out numbers. Then I will have my place in line and I can sleep in!! Most of the time though, I just get to the sale 3-4 hours before the sale is set to open and get my number. This has been a pretty good gauge for me. If the sale is like the farmhouse sale I went to, I got there like 5 or 6 hours before. I know it sounds crazy, but estate sale people are crazy!! Most companies do allow for street numbers and once you get yours, you are free to do something else (even if some people frown upon it, who cares!!) until the sale starts...just make sure you get back about a half hour before the sale is set to open because sometimes they'll open early -- now always but occasionally. I always remember why I am going to a sale -- what items I am looking for at that specific sale and to head for those first, then I will look at the rest of what the sale has to offer.

In closing, the best way to get to know your way around estate sales is to just keep going. The more you go, the more you will learn about how sales work in your area. Some places might have tons of great items in rural areas, but the city sales are duds. In Southeastern Michigan, both rural and urban areas produce good sales, so I know to check out every sale that is listed. It seems here that the suburbs tend to have more of the duds, but it's not always the case. Just keep working at it and you will no doubt become a pro!!

If I missed anything important or you have any questions, feel free to comment or email me!

Estate Sale and Flea Market Goodies....and an Announcement

This weekend actually proved to be a successful one for estate sales and flea market finds. The crazy linen sale was super super cheap on Saturday (the last day), so I went back to scrounge up some of the left over linens. I came away with a vintage tablecloth (pictured above), two embroidered tea towels (one pictured above), a vintage doily, and a vintage Christmas tablecloth that had been made into a valance. Both tableclothes are in pretty bad shape -- the x-mas one is cut in half and the one pictured above has a few holes and stains. I plan to use them for some craft projects, although I do lament the thought of chopping up vintage linens. I guess it's better to use them than to just let them sit in a box. Also at this sale, I got the vintage cake plate and little cup. The cake plate was some I have been looking out for!

After this sale, I headed over to another sale that produced the vintage perfume bottle, another wish list item. It was half off. :) I couldn't believe I got it for only $5 bucks and it's in perfect shape....no smells even!! I also picked up two vintage movie books at this sale as well.

Sunday, I made my weekly trip to the Royal Oak flea market and found some really good deals. My favorite find of the day was this early 40's house dress. It's in perfect condition and it simply doesn't get better than this!! I mean, look at those buttons!! And, that fabulous print! Now I'm really itching for warmer weather.

I haven't posted in a few days because I have been working on a giveaway for my lovely readers!! I finally got all the kinks worked out, so make sure to check back tomorrow when I post more information on what I am offering up!

A Successful Day

I haven't posted a lot about estate sale finds in a long time. This is mostly due to the fact that there haven't been a lot of eye catching sales as of late. For the past few months, it seems that there have only been about one great sale a month -- kinda rare for Michigan. Since discovering estates sales two plus years ago, there has always been at least one good sale each weekend. I guess we are experiencing a dry spell.....which has been nice on my wallet and has allowed me to acclimate less stuff and clutter. I have also been fine tuning my tastes and destashing my stash. When I was starting out, I think I would buy things more because they were inexpensive and less because I loved them. Now when I go to sales I have a set goal in mind, mostly because I have been getting better at keeping a mental list of items to keep an eye out for, which coincides with pin pointing my tastes. I think it also helps to know what different kinds of items are available and most frequently appear at your local thrift stores. I know for me, vintage glassware pops up at lot at thrift stores and for much less than at estate sales, so I tend to bypass that stuff at the sales.

Today was a good estate sale day. The house of the sale I attended was literately filled to the brim with vintage dishes, linens, and weird/creepy old dolls -- few of which were actually vintage. I didn't expect the linens to be priced so high, considering they had so many to move out; I am guessing there were at least 1,000 pieces, no joke. There were at least 2,000 different dishes and glassware objects to take your pick from. Those were priced fair. I couldn't come home without at least one new linen for my collection, considering how many there were to choose from. The tablecloth pictured above caught my eye. There was also a lot of great vintage fabric, but at ten bucks per piece, I had to leave the pieces there. The guy gave me a price for all my items, since the only thing marked was the tablecloth ($8). However, I worked it out and on average, my items cost just a little less than $3 each, so I was thoroughly satisfied.

I loved the chalkware piece the moment I saw it. I have two smaller pieces that are in a similar design and color scheme. I am thinking the three will look nice together in a kitchen someday. I am a sucker for anything that is peach glazed, swanky swigs, and for metal recipe boxes. I might even do a whole post on my vintage metal recipe boxes, which is one collection I actually have a back-story as to why/how I collect them.

How are the sales in your neighborhood?

Snow Day Sale

Today I got the best news when I awoke.....a SNOW DAY!!!! Being a college student, these are very few and far between, it rarely ever happens. However, last night southeastern Michigan received about 5-10+ inches of snow, depending on where you live of course. I was extremely elated and decided to check and see if there were any estates sales. There are hardly never sales on Wednesdays so imagine my luck when there was one, close to home, and literally PACKED with TONS of vintage clothing and over all vintage goodies.

My mom and I headed out and got there about two hours after the sale opened. There was still a lot of great stuff left, but I could tell that the really spectacular stuff had already sold. Nonetheless, I still found a lot of great deals and was able to cross of some more things off my look out list. Apparently, this home/store front was being used as a storage facility for the owner and he wanted to clear everything out. It was truly a digger sale, with many open boxes waiting to be looked into. In the boxes is where I found most of my deals...I am thinking the early birds didn't take time out to do so. Anyways, here is a list of all the things I got. Sorry for the lack of photos, most of the stuff is either drying or at the cleaners.

*Two pairs of vintage sunglasses $5 each
*A pair of late 40's black velvet baby doll pumps $3

The house part of the building had a whole room just full of shoes. The walls were lined with shelving and still filled to the brim with vintage shoes. This was like my dream room!! I've been looking for a new/old pair of black pumps to replace a pair I have. These fit like a dream and are so cute...I'll post pictures soon. The room also had a table in the middle with accessories. There was a shallow box full of vintage sunglasses; there must have been at least 30 pairs. I picked out two pairs and I had no clue that the black framed ones were vintage Foster Grants until I was cleaning them at home. I think the red and orange ones look like the pair Gene Tierney wears in Leave Her to Heaven (1945).

*A vintage beaded sweater $2
*A black vintage 50's rayon circle skirt $5
*The cutest black 40's Hat $3
*Two pairs of Navy issued pants (one black, one navy) $2 each
*A vintage all-in-one girdle new with tags (a list item!!) $2
*A 40's silk pajama top $2
*An early 50's navy dress $5
*2+ yards of vintage rayon fabric $3
*5 vintage blouses (some silk, all have labels!!) $2 each

When I was looking through the racks that had the blouses on them, I can across a pink one with rhinestone buttons. I thought it was cute, so I picked it up to examine it. Would you believe my surprise when I looked at the label and it said CHANEL??????!!!! This sale actually had a lot of designer items, the guy in line behind me got a few items by Christian Dior. Since there were other designer items there, it's pretty likely the Chanel shirt is a real, but I am going to investigate the label. Regardless, it's cute and was only $2.

My grand total for 17 items was $49. Not bad, if I do say so myself!! I hope everyone enjoyed their day as much as I did!! :)

Mad Men Plaid

Lana Turner's daughter has said how her mother had the tendency to nickname her jewelry and other items. I have found myself doing this lately as well. I have named this dress my "Mad Men Plaid" dress because it reminds me of something Peggy would wear. This dress came from the sale mentioned in my last post and is a homemade flannel wiggle. I looked at this dress the first day of the sale and decided I liked some other dresses more and put this one back. Afterwards, I was a little bummed I didn't get it because how often do you see a vintage flannel dress?? When I returned to the sale two days later, it was still there, so it came home with me! All of this lady's dresses had their original belts and this one did as well, but I liked how it looked with my wider silver belt instead.

The coat is a perfect match for this dress (I put a sepia overlay on it for flair). I found it at a garage sale two summers ago for only $20. It is such a lovely combination of blue and grey; something not often seen in vintage coats...or at least not around here. I love how much I matched and felt sooo dressed up for my afternoon lunch with a girlfriend.

Pretty Pinks

This past Thursday, my mom and I ventured out to the farmland of Michigan to attend a once in a lifetime estate sale at a farmhouse. This sale was UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! It contained three to four generations of vintage goodies and everything was truly "priced to sell." The sale's description said there were over 100 "movie quality" clothing items from the 40's to the 60's. My mom came along to help me get some new items for my closet. She did a great job of picking out some wonderful pieces!! I have to say the majority of the clothing was 30's/40's farm dresses, and I picked up quite a few. They work well with cardigans and I want to pick up a pair of boots like the ladies wear in The Edge of Love.

The lady or ladies of the house were seamstresses and there were a lot of vintage patterns and fabric, both of which were added to my purchase. They also made a lot of their clothing and saved everything....even if it was torn or was no longer wearable. I came home with two whole bags of stuff the first day and another bag two days later when the items were at a discounted price. I was so elated to cross off a few things from my look out list, including vintage heel over boots and a high waisted girdle.

The robe in the above picture was one of the hand-sewn items and is well made. The cream top in the picture next to the robe is also from the sale. It is a pajama top dating probably to the early '40s based on the label. My mom treated me to both--Thanks Mom!!!!

These pictures are from the weekend and I am just now getting around to posting about them. It's finals week and I have been crazy busy with studying and paper writing...Saturday I regain my life!! :) This past weekend I also tried out a new hairdo to go with my new clothes!! I hadn't done pin curls in a while, so I set my hair with those and styled some faux bangs. I really enjoyed the faux bangs and plan on doing them again soon!!!

Most of my following outfits will be of the clothes I picked up at this estate sale...stay tuned!! :)

Sweater Season and a Product Review

This past weekend I saw two movies I had been dying to see; Pirate Radio and Coco Before Chanel. Pirate Radio was spectacular!!! If you love 60's music and 60's British fashion, I highly suggest you check out that movie. It was super funny and tells a great story. I was less satisfied with Coco Before Chanel. I definitely prefer the Shirley MacLaine's version. I felt that version was a bit more entertaining and showed more of the fashion side to Chanel's life than Coco Before Chanel. However, if you are interested in Coco Chanel I would go see it, the french countryside cinematography was quite beautiful.

I saw Pirate Radio on Friday night and it inspired my Saturday evening look. I got this sweater over the summer at an estate sale for $3 and I have been patiently waiting until colder weather to wear it out.

Saturday I also tried out my Hot Sticks for the second time -- the first time did not go so well. After seeing this video and this video I decided I needed to purchase these and try them out for myself. I got mine through Walmart.com for only $15 (and that's the link if you click on hot sticks above). I did the site to store and it was really nice, and I do recommend that process if you don't need the item ASAP. My second attempt at using them went better, and I probably will get better over time. I did find that they can be a bit difficult to roll your hair on. I think this is because they are so small in diameter and don't really have any groves to help grip the hair and possibly because the rollers get pretty hot in the centers. I also found that my hair got much more frizzy with the Hot Sticks than they do with a wet set. The set I have is a 14 count and does work well, but I would probably recommend the larger 20 count set for girls with longer or really thick hair. The set that I did the second time around lasted over night and into the second day -- which I was really impressed with; especially for a hot roller setting. I think it lasted longer because I sprayed some Lotta Body setting lotion into my hair before drying it and used a little bit of hair spray on each section before rolling. Overall, I give Hot Sticks a thumbs up!! If you use Hot Sticks, leave a comment for any tips or tricks to using them!!

Vintage Magazines and Estate Sales

One of the many vast vintage items I collect is vintage magazines. I love to thumb through all the old ads and pictures and discover new recipes. I also really enjoy the cover art. I like how some magazines have photos for cover art, like LIFE; and some have a more artistic take, like Ladies Home Journal. I think one of the biggest reasons I enjoy collecting vintage magazines is because they are relatively inexpensive and normally easy to come by. The last two estate sales I went to didn't have any vintage magazines, however there were many other great items up for grabs.

The sale I went to last weekend yielded the above; a beautiful painting ($2) and a vintage knitting bag ($4). The knitting bag has been on my list of things to look out for and the painting just kind of happened. I found it in the basement under a bunch of stuff and figured if the price was right I would buy it. I did get a few other items at the sale; some lovely linens, a super cute vintage apron, and some dishes -- something I can't seem to get enough of!! I sure do hope that I will have a lot of stage pace in my future kitchen and lots of dinner parties to make use of all these purchases!!

I went to a bag sale today and picked up a few items. The most exciting was four strips of vintage shelf edging in the most beautiful rose pattern. I also picked up a bag of vintage iron-on embroidery transfers for my mom and I to share. She has already picked out her favorites!

Hope you all had lovely weekends!

Hello Again....

It feels like I haven't blogged in forever. There has been what seems like an endless amount of film papers and film viewing I've had to do since the start of this semester. I have managed to go to a few estate sales and some films at the Redford in between all of my homework. Above is an outfit I wore to class last week. I was really pleased with how it all came together. The dress was old stock and still had the tags on it. It's a "Versatiler"....."The dress that goes everywhere and does everything" It's also suppose to feel like cashmere, but I don't agree (it is soft but not that soft). The shoes are a deep chocolate brown. I have been on a quest for the perfect brown vintage heels. I wanted suede and a 40's style. I found these at the last estate sale I went to for a whole $2.50 and they were everything I wanted and more. Definitely the cheapest pair of shoes I have ever purchased.

Dress and Purse: eBay
Pin: Grandma
Pearl Necklace: Mom
Shoes: Estate Sale
Here are the other shoes I found last weekend at the estate sales I went to. The top lizard pair were purchased at the same sale as the brown suede ones, also only $2.50. The pink ones were purchased at a different sale that same weekend, $5. This sale was super!!!! I got a vintage quilt with turtle appliqués on it for only $5 and it is in super condition and will fit a twin size bed. I also got a really great 40's suit jacket and a cute home made 50's blouse and skirt.

I'm really enjoying the fall weather here.....definitely my favorite season for sure! What yours?

Emily

***OH! I forgot to add in my last post something important about keeping out smells. Heat will bring out the smell of B.O. in clothes so I always wash in cold water and line dry.

The Mend and Make Do Dress

Yesterday was my first day of class as a senior in college. I didn't have much time to put together a new outfit, so I threw this on, one of my go-to's this summer. I call it my "mend and make do dress." I found it at an estate sale at the beginning of the summer and just had to buy it. The dress was literally in shreds, but I loved the fabric and the pattern of the neckline I just had to take it home and see what I could salvage. The skirt was fully intact and had no tears, so at least I could have made a skirt out of it. The real problem was the bodice and it needed buttons. I got to work and first I cleaned the dress (it smelled super musty) and then got to work ironing. I figured it would be easiest to put back together if it was pressed. Once that was done, I got out the pin cushion and got to work piecing it back together. Most of the problems on the bodice were loose seams, but there where a few rips not in the seams and there was a hole that had been patched with the same material behind it. I got it all put back together in one sitting and was soooooo excited to wear it. I normally wear it with the black sweater because it hides the patched hole, but you can hardly see that anyways. For some reason there is a dark mark on the dress in the picture, but there are no stains on it...weird!

What are your favorite mend and make do items?

The Lady with the Alligator Purse

Today I went to pick up my purse from the leather repair shop. I was so excited to see how it looked and that excitement grew once I saw my bag! I tried out a new shoe repair shop since the one my mom used to go to has since closed. Needless to say, I will be returning if and when I need something else repaired. This guy did an excellent job. He couldn't repair the handle so he made a new one out of matching leather, and didn't charge me!! I was happy that he did a new handle, because now I won't worry when using this bag, the leather will definitely hold up better than alligator would. He also oiled and polished the outside. It really shines!!!! This $10 estate sale find has really blossomed into something I can cherish for many years to come.

Since finding this bag, I really wanted some shoes to match. I'm the kind of girl that really likes to have shoes that matches my purses. Since the bag wasn't exactly what I was looking for, (I had a 40's box style in mind on my vintage wish list) I really wanted to find shoes that would bring out a 40's look. I found this pair pictured on eBay for a real steal and am now waiting their arrival in the mail. I really cannot wait until they come!! I have the perfect late 30's coat that I want to wear with the shoes and bag once it gets a little bit colder here in Michigan.

Sale Update!!!!

Hello Darling Readers!!! Here is an update on the estate sale that promised lots of vintage clothes, as mentioned in my last post. Oh My!!!! This was an incredible sale!!!! I am so excited just typing about it. I got there about two hours before the sale, thinking there were going to be tons of people ahead of me in line. I was wrong....luckily!! I ended up getting number three and was extremely thrilled. The next two hours passed very slow but I had my brother and the Wall Street Journal to keep me occupied. Then came 9 a.m. and I got to enter the sale. I was expecting the prices to be high, considering it was run by an estate sale company, but I was proven wrong yet again. Everything was super cheap and super cute. I managed to get quite a few nice vintage pieces. The two people ahead of me were grabbing at everything and not giving anyone a chance. The one woman was from out of state and just was scooping up anything and everything...not even looking at it. The second person ahead of me was from a vintage store that I frequent and I was able to grab that dress pictured above from his discard pile. I am thinking its early 40's because it has side snaps for a closure.

I went back on the second day yesterday. It was the last day and everything was half off. I took home these cookbooks along with a few more clothing items and linens. As I have mentioned before, I love these little pamphlet books and I took home every one this lady had owned.

This suit and blouse is from the first day. I think the suit is late 40's, however it has a nylon zipper and I am thinking that the metal one was replaced. The tags and the buttonholes indicate the 40's. But, whatever year it is from, I love it. It is a slightly heavier linen and has a great shape. The blouse was found on a different rack, but I think it will go nicely with this suit. I also got a 40's navy blue suit, complete with metal zipper and a pleated skirt. No pictures yet as it is at the dry cleaners along with a few 50's shift dresses that are fabulous!!! I also forgot to take pictures of the beautiful hats I took home. They were all in pristine condition and I have one or two that might make their way to my etsy. I know there will be a light pink pill box heading there, complete with perfect netting!!

While the everyone was scouring the racks and racks of clothes in the basement, I checkout out the shoes. I was able to grab three pairs of 40's wedges before everyone else saw that there were shoes down there also. Each pair only cost $3!!!! One pair was brand new and the one above looks to have only been worn once.

Overall, this was a vintage gal's dream sale!!! I was so tickled that everything was in my size range and in wonderful condition. In one weekend, I spiced up my wardrobe!!!!

Sneak Peek...

These pictures are of the estate sale that I am going to tomorrow morning, bright and early!! I am so excited...I can hardly fall asleep (hence why I am blogging!!). The title of the sale was "Mid Century Clothes." From the pictures it looks like this lady had hundreds of shoes; almost every picture up loaded that shows a bedroom shows shoes. The listing said that the clothes are from the 40's on and many have their tags still attached. Oh can't 9 a.m. come quicker?!!

I'll post any finds later on. Wish me luck!!
