3 down, 1 to go

That's right, lovely readers, I only have one semester left of graduate school.... and boy am I happy! I have been a student for nearly 20 years, that is if you count preschool, and I sure am excited to no longer be a student come the end of April.

Anyway, as I turn in my final papers for this semester, here's a look at one of my outfits from a week or so ago. I have been so bogged down with paper writing that my little blog has had to take a backseat. However, I have been taking lots of photos of outfits, my house (which now has freshly cleaned vintage furniture in it), and my holiday decorations that I have been putting up in between all this writing.

This grey dress is one of the ones I bought on my trip to PA. I got it in a cute little shop called Yesterday's News in Pittsburgh. I belted the sweater and wore my favorite black velvet pumps. Good thing I got to take these for a spin before all the snow!

January marked the start of my graduate assistantship working in the classroom. Last semester, I only proctored labs, screening films for different classes. This semester, I get to be in an actual classroom, grade papers, give a few lectures, etc. It's all so exciting and much more enjoyable than my own personal graduate classes I am taking.

On the days I get to lecture, I like to dress up a bit more than normal. I find that it helps me feel more at ease being in front of the classroom and I can focus more on what I need to say. I also need to wear flats because I have to do A LOT of walking while on campus and this includes stairs. I love my heels, but they just aren't practical sometimes.

The only thing vintage about this outfit is the blouse (late 60s) and the carved bakelite scottie pin. And, even though this really isn't a vintage look, I feel it has a 40s flair to it. I wish the skirt didn't have that hideous circular belt buckle in the front, otherwise I feel it would have even more of a 40s feel to it.

A New Beginning....

Sorry I have been gone for the past week or so. Last Wednesday I started grad school and my graduate assistantship. To say that I was/am a bit overwhelmed is an understatement. It definitely was a bit difficult to get back into the swing of things, but now that I have started both classes, I have a better feel for things and my new schedule.

I wore this two weekends ago, while it was still hot enough here to wear a summer dress; it has since cooled off considerably. This is also the last photo of me with long hair -- I got a haircut the day after this photo was taken. I am also sporting my new bakelite bracelets that I found at an estate sale for $1 each!!! My first time finding bakelite in the "wild!!"

A Day of Accomplishment

This past weekend I closed the door to my undergrad career at Oakland University and opened the door to a whole new stage in life. My college commencement took place on a very rainy Saturday and was unfortunately outdoors. I had my trusty umbrella in tow so my hair didn't get too drenched, but it did loose a lot of the curl by the end of the ceremony. At least the rain let up and we were able to march out of the pavilion to the bagpipes. The rain was not going to put a damper on this day, which I had been looking forward to ever since my first college class four years ago. I had a great time sitting next to a few friends from the film department and we kept each others spirits up as we roughed out the rain. In regards to my outfit, I was trying to recreate what a 1940s high school or college graduate girl would have worn on her special day. And, since the general look of the cap and gown hasn't really changed since those seventy years, I feel I accomplished the look.

We Interrupt This Broadcast...

Just a quick update! I have been working very hard at my computer for the last week finishing up assignments for my final college semester. I only wish I looked as glamourous as the girl in the picture!

Tonight is my last undergraduate class. I must say I will probably be a bit saddened when I leave the classroom tonight! I've really enjoyed college; I definitely liked it much more than high school and learned far more.

Thursday is the deadline for all my papers and one week from Saturday I will be a college graduate!!! After all the craziness of the end of the semester and filling out applications dies down, I am looking forward to get back to my regular posting and have tons of posts planned for the near future!

The Mean Reds.....New Favorite Dress

First off, I must apologize for missing Film Fashion Friday. It completely slipped my mind, what with all the preparations for Easter and with my final college semester winding down. I graduate May 1st and I simply cannot wait!!! Until then, my posting may be sparse, with all the paper writing that is going on!

Anyways, today I offered to do the grocery shopping for our Easter dinner for my mom. I am one of those crazy people that actually enjoys grocery shopping. I don't know why I do, it's just one of those things I enjoy, like doing the laundry. Today was also a warmer day here in Southeastern Michigan, that is until the rain started. I had planned on wearing my new Remix sandals with this dress, but the rain forced me to put on more practical shoes.

Regardless of the rain, I decided this was the prefect day to break in my new vintage SWIRL dress!!! I have been wanting and searching for one of these things FOREVER. And last week, after being out bid on several dresses on eBay, I was finally the highest bidder! The dress came last week and I have been itching to wear it since. I thought grocery shopping was very appropriate, since that is what many women in the past probably wore them for. I just love this dress. it is so comfy and figure flattering. I hope that someday I might be able to own a few more!

I have so many things I want to share with you all from last week -- including some great finds at some sales, so hopefully I can throw together an update post before classes start up for the week. :)

Snow Day Sale

Today I got the best news when I awoke.....a SNOW DAY!!!! Being a college student, these are very few and far between, it rarely ever happens. However, last night southeastern Michigan received about 5-10+ inches of snow, depending on where you live of course. I was extremely elated and decided to check and see if there were any estates sales. There are hardly never sales on Wednesdays so imagine my luck when there was one, close to home, and literally PACKED with TONS of vintage clothing and over all vintage goodies.

My mom and I headed out and got there about two hours after the sale opened. There was still a lot of great stuff left, but I could tell that the really spectacular stuff had already sold. Nonetheless, I still found a lot of great deals and was able to cross of some more things off my look out list. Apparently, this home/store front was being used as a storage facility for the owner and he wanted to clear everything out. It was truly a digger sale, with many open boxes waiting to be looked into. In the boxes is where I found most of my deals...I am thinking the early birds didn't take time out to do so. Anyways, here is a list of all the things I got. Sorry for the lack of photos, most of the stuff is either drying or at the cleaners.

The house part of the building had a whole room just full of shoes. The walls were lined with shelving and still filled to the brim with vintage shoes. This was like my dream room!! I've been looking for a new/old pair of black pumps to replace a pair I have. These fit like a dream and are so cute...I'll post pictures soon. The room also had a table in the middle with accessories. There was a shallow box full of vintage sunglasses; there must have been at least 30 pairs. I picked out two pairs and I had no clue that the black framed ones were vintage Foster Grants until I was cleaning them at home. I think the red and orange ones look like the pair Gene Tierney wears in Leave Her to Heaven (1945).

When I was looking through the racks that had the blouses on them, I can across a pink one with rhinestone buttons. I thought it was cute, so I picked it up to examine it. Would you believe my surprise when I looked at the label and it said CHANEL??????!!!! This sale actually had a lot of designer items, the guy in line behind me got a few items by Christian Dior. Since there were other designer items there, it's pretty likely the Chanel shirt is a real, but I am going to investigate the label. Regardless, it's cute and was only $2.

My grand total for 17 items was $49. Not bad, if I do say so myself!! I hope everyone enjoyed their day as much as I did!! :)

Last Day of School...

I meant to post this last week, but with all the holiday craziness, I am now just getting around to sharing this. Last week was my last class for my last fall undergrad semester (I graduate in May!!!!!). I was itching to wear one of my new dresses that I acquired at the farmhouse estate sale. This lady made SEVERAL of these dresses in the same style. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the pattern for this style among her stash of SEVERAL patterns. I ended up buying three of these, the only three left that were in good, wearable condition. The others had been patched and worn with lots of love. I can just picture this lady wearing one of these dresses while feeding the chickens. The other two dresses have ties in the back and for some reason, this one did not. All of the other dresses there had the ties as well. Maybe she forgot to sew them in? Anyways, when I saw this dress at the sale, I knew I had the perfect belt and shoes to match at home. I also just loved the print of the fabric. All this lady's dresses were made out of the cutest fabrics!!

Hello Again....

It feels like I haven't blogged in forever. There has been what seems like an endless amount of film papers and film viewing I've had to do since the start of this semester. I have managed to go to a few estate sales and some films at the Redford in between all of my homework. Above is an outfit I wore to class last week. I was really pleased with how it all came together. The dress was old stock and still had the tags on it. It's a "Versatiler"....."The dress that goes everywhere and does everything" It's also suppose to feel like cashmere, but I don't agree (it is soft but not that soft). The shoes are a deep chocolate brown. I have been on a quest for the perfect brown vintage heels. I wanted suede and a 40's style. I found these at the last estate sale I went to for a whole $2.50 and they were everything I wanted and more. Definitely the cheapest pair of shoes I have ever purchased.

Here are the other shoes I found last weekend at the estate sales I went to. The top lizard pair were purchased at the same sale as the brown suede ones, also only $2.50. The pink ones were purchased at a different sale that same weekend, $5. This sale was super!!!! I got a vintage quilt with turtle appliqués on it for only $5 and it is in super condition and will fit a twin size bed. I also got a really great 40's suit jacket and a cute home made 50's blouse and skirt.

I'm really enjoying the fall weather here.....definitely my favorite season for sure! What yours?

***OH! I forgot to add in my last post something important about keeping out smells. Heat will bring out the smell of B.O. in clothes so I always wash in cold water and line dry.

I can't believe it's December!!!

The month of November just flew right by!! I guess times goes by fast when you are having fun.....or are super busy!! This semester of school was pretty demanding and I am really looking forward to a little time off and the start of next semester -- less hard classes!! :) I am one of those nerds that actually likes school, even if I do complain about it a lot!!

Anyways!! This past November I made it to a lot of sales and still haven't been able to catch up with posting all my finds. I got this books for $0.25 each. My mom and I flipped through them...there are some great recipes and some interesting ones too, ones that I prolly won;t be trying ever!!

Sales at the booth were really good this past month as well. I was so happy because for a while there I was having a slow time at selling stuff, but I think with Christmas right around the corner things will start to pick up. Hope everyone is enjoying getting ready for Christmas!!

Long Time....No Post

It seems like forever since I have posting anything!! It seems like life had been very busy these past two weeks. I started a new semester of school and that is keeping me super busy. I am in all my major classes now and it's very exciting! Sales at the booth has really picked up. Many of my larger items sold, so I have had to make a few trips to the mall to restock. I also have been hitting up sooooo many sales!! I have gotten so many great deals that I can't wait to share!!!

Here is an updated picture of my booth. The mall asked that we take part in a storewide sale. I thought it would be a good way to help get some traffic to my booth. Now onto all the finds from the past two weeks (warning: there are a lot!!!)

I am trying to get together some Christmas items for the booth so I can add them in by November. These cute little candle holders were purchased at an estate sale.

I picked these flowers up today at a yard sale. They are plastic, however, with a little spray paint, I think they will look a lot better!

I have been on a search for jello molds since I regretted not picking some up at a yard sale. I got all 12 for $4.00 today on my way out of the antique mall. I was so thrilled to get the sifter for only $2.00. I hope to display it in my kitchen some day. I got two of those glasses; they match the milk bottle I got a while back. The sterling silver cake plate was a bargain at only $1.00. I have yet to clean it!
This would have to be my favorite find of the day! It was only $3.00 for the scale and original box. It is in excellent condition. This will be staying with me!
I got these mirrors earlier in the week at a yard sale a block from my house. I have yet to decided what to do with them. I might keep them or I might put them in the booth.
I couldn't pass up this apron today. It has the nicest needle work! I will be taking it to the booth on my next trip.
This is another item that was on my wish list. I was never going to pay the high prices at antique stores and even at flea markets. This I found for only $2.00 at a yard sale. I am planning on doing something to decorate the front.

This fabric and the Swanky Swigs I got all for $1.00 at the flea market. I am still thinking of something creative to do with the fabric. It is not very large....so it's been tricky to think up something.
More ornaments for the booth!!! At the bottom there are small feather tree sized ones--totally worth $1.00!!
This tray was my favorite find from last week. It is in awesome condition and will be a great add to my collection. I also couldn't beat the price---25 cents!!
I am still trying to get this pan clean. Most of them are coming clean!! I was thrilled to find out that it was from the 50's. I just bought it because it was only a buck and I liked the design!!

These are more additions to my hope chest. The canisters were only $1.00 for all. I got it on a rainy, dark day so I was a little disappointed to find them less than the best condition when I went to clean them....well only the tops are not so good. The ice trays were found at a quick stop to a yard sale on my way to school. I saw similar ones at that large flea market I went to, however, they were very pricey. These were 25 cents each!!
I have been wanting one of these for a very long time. But, being a college student and on a tight budget, they were always out of my price range. This was not the case with this one...$10.00.
Here the last of all my finds for the past two weeks. The Fire King measuring cups and the large golden pitcher stayed with me, along with the pink and white cup and the peach cup. The rest made their way to the booth today.

I thought I would share with you my future stove. This is in my grandma's basement and as long as I can remember, I have always pictured it in my kitchen someday. (My grandma so generously offered it to me, knowing my love for vintage stuff). It needs to be rewired and then it all set!! I love that it is a double oven and that it has the large pot thing in the upper left corner (it can also be removed). They don't make ovens like this today!!
