Whoo's Got a New Dress

Week of Product Reviews: Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Treatment Concealer in Fair

After seeing many commercials promoting Maybelline's dark circle concealer, I decided to try it when it went on sale. I am trying to use my Max Factor Pan Stick sparingly, since it is no longer available in the US -- thanks P & G. Anyway, I have been trying out new concealers to see if I can find one that is comparable to Max Factors, which I know probably isn't going to happen. Have any of you US girls had any luck with purchasing Max Factor products online?

I have been using this concealer for about a week now and I have mix feelings about it. I have followed the directions on the tube for how to apply it under your eyes and I still feel it doesn't make much of a difference and isn't anything special. Granted, I do not have a major problem with dark circles, I would still like to cover up what I do have and I don't feel this does any better of a job than other concealers.

I do, however, think it is an excellent blemish concealer and this is what I have been using it for. I like the sponge tip that I can apply directly to my face, eliminating the use for a brush or my fingers.

I haven't found this is be very long lasting. By the end of the day, I can see all the spots I previously covered up, which if I am spending $9 on something, I would hope that it would work, at least for the length of a day.

I am going to use this up and probably never purchase it again. Any ideas on finding a good replacement for my beloved Max Factor Pan Stick?

Week of Product Reviews: NYX Trio Eyeshadow in Sping Leaf/Lime Green/Green Tea

I think it would be a pretty fair assessment that NYX is rapidly becoming my favorite brand of make-up. Up until last week, I have never bought anything from their line and am now wishing I would have sooner. :)

This eyeshadow trio appealed to me because I liked that the colors could theoretically work well on their own or together with the others in the pallet. What I discovered when I tried it for the first time was how creamy the shadow was, yet it still was a powder shadow. The powder just glides on and has a long lasting staying power, without clumping on you later in the day. I really like that I can mix and match the shades and it always seems to work out. I don't think I have ever had this experience with a trio or quad set before.

Week of Product Reviews: Formula 10.0.6 Best Face Forward Foaming Cleanser

Lately, I have been on a quest to find the right face wash for my ever changing skin. It seems that every one I try either dries out my skin, creates breakouts, or simply doesn't get the job done. The other day while at ULTA, I decided to take the leap and test out Formula 10.0.6's Best Face Forward Foaming Cleanser. I had previously tried a few other products from this company's line with great disappointment, so I didn't have high hopes for the success of this product.

To my surprise, I actually like the product and it is helping with clearing up my skin. The smell is fresh and pleasant; having more of a fruity smell. I don't feel that the face wash really foams, but it does create a nice lather in which a little will go a long way.

I really like how my skin feels after using Best Face Forward. It leaves my skin feeling clean without that drying out effect that so many cleansers seem to have. I also love this product's price point -- at $6.99 it is affordable, even on a grad student's tight budget! :)

Week of Product Reviews: NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder in Auburn/Red

Welcome to a week of product reviews here on Livin' Vintage. I hope you enjoy!

Ever since dying my hair red, I have been meaning to get some new powder to fill in my brows with. After strolling the aisles at ULTA, I came away with NYX Eyebrow Cake Powder in Auburn/Red. I must say, I am quite smitten with this product! Not only does it give my brows a more auburn effect, making them blend better with my new hair color, the powder is long lasting and is very pigmented.

I also am in love with the brush the kit supplies. Up until now, I had been using a run-of-the-mill cheap-o eyebrow brush that got the job done. However, since using NYX's, I will never go back to my cheap-o brush. The bristles are stiff, much like on a child's paintbrush, but they hold onto the powder well and apply it to your brow in a wonderful fashion. My only complaint is that the handle is short, to accommodate compact packaging, but that really isn't that big of a deal.

I also like that this kit supplies some eyebrow gel and a lash brush. I don't use this feature of the kit much, but when I have used it, it has worked out great; setting the powder and the shape of my brows for the remainder of the day.

I can't say enough about this product! It also helps that it is pretty cheap ($4.99) without slacking on quality.

Product Review: Nutrisse Ultra-Color, Shade R3

I am pretty much an exclusive at-home hair colorer. I rarely go to the salon to get my hair done. This is probably because I am pretty particular what I choose to spend my money on. Plus, I feel if done right, you can achieve the same results coloring your hair at home as at the salon.

In comes this hair dye. Several months ago, I attempted to go red, without the results that I was hoping for; after which I finally accepted that I would not be able to get these results without lighting my hair first. However, a few months later, I got another bee in my bonnet to give it one more go. While strolling the hair dye aisle, I came across Nutrisse Ultra-Color Shade R3 which claimed to be formulated especially for dark hair. I figured, why not? and bought the dye. For less than $10, I felt it was a safe gamble.

Well, to my surprise, it actually did what it said it would! I've had it on for about two weeks+ now and haven't really noticed any major fading. Although, for the first few days it continued to wash out, which really concerned me, since most home dyes I have used tend not to do that.

I left it on my hair for the max amount of time, to ensure that I would get the best results. What is nice about this dye is it comes with a small vile of olive and avocado oil to mix in with the dye, plus a conditioner to put on after you wash it out. I felt that my hair was left smooth and silky after the dying process and my ends seem to be the same as before I dyed my hair.

Overall, I would give this dye a 9.5 out of 10. I had to take a half point off since this dye is harder to get off your skin than any other dye I have used before. It's pretty potent.

I plan on keeping up with the color with manic panic. Anyone have color suggestions or advice for using it? I have never used manic panic before, but have heard good things.

Product Review: Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain in Gothic

Last Friday, after a long day of showing films in my screening labs I proctor, I decided that a treat for myself was in order and what better than a new lipstick to perk up my mood?

I had seen a commercial for Revlon's "Just Bitten" lip stain and decided to give it a go. I haven't really been wearing much lipstick lately because it comes off on my clothes and doesn't last for very long. The commercial stated that the lip stain would last all day -- even through meal time and would not come off on anything. It also included a balm to keep your lips moist throughout the day, something I really liked about the product.

There are two reds and I chose the darker of the two, GOTHIC. I was a bit worried with the name like GOTHIC that it would be intense, but I really ended up liking my choice. The stain is really like a marker which goes on much like a marker would to your lips. It has a nice pointed tip to make application easy and precise. Some girls wear some sort of foundation under their lipstick, I don't, so I just applied it to my lips. Afterwards, you apply the clear balm which helps seal the stain and also provides some shine. My results might be a bit different, due to no lip liner or foundation, however, I found this stuff to really "stain" your lips and stay put.

I wore it out one night where there would be no eating or drinking involved to see how it would fair. It stayed put all evening and didn't come off on my clothing or on my beau, which is the most important, isn't it? ;) A few days later, I wore it when we would be going out for dinner and although it came off on my napkin a bit, most of it was still on my lips and just a simple application of the balm was all that was needed.

The only downside that I can find to this product is that it is really hard to get off. I tried removing it with soap and water and it didn't take much off. I also tried a bit of rubbing alcohol, which again, took a little bit off, but did not remove the entire product from my lips. However, the following morning there was little left and the soap and water did the trick to remove the rest.

I really like that this lip stain stays on you and not on your clothing or your man!! It is priced at $10 and I think for a drugstore lip product it is worth the ten bucks. For the most part is does what it says and it really is a lovely shade for us vintage gals!

Hi Dear Readers! Last week, I was contacted by CSN Stores to select a product to review for my blog. I haven't decided exactly what I am going to pick yet, right now I am leaning towards a rug for my new place, but still haven't narrowed down my choice.

Product Review: Maybelline New York Falsies Mascara

I am a self confessed mascara nut. I love have thick, long, dark lashes and am on a consent search for the perfect mascara. I used to love Max Factor, but stupid P & G decided to no longer carry Max Factor in the USA. I don't know what I am going to do when my pan stick runs out. If any of my UK readers would be willing to send me some, I could send you something too!!

Anyways, I was on a make-up buying spree the other day and decided to try out Maybelline's Falsies Mascara. I was quite skeptical, as I feel that most of these companies and their claims never really seem to be true, but to my surprise, it actually did most of the things it promises to do.

I find that it makes my lashes longer, a bit fuller, and overall gives the slight appearance of fake lashes. While I don't feel that it really gives the look of "falsies" I do like that it washes off pretty easily and doesn't flake while wearing. I do find that it can have the tendency to clump a bit, but I do like to put on a few coats, so if you are only putting on one, I don't see the clumping to be a problem. I think with this mascara that how you apply it is everything.

My overall rating is 4 out of 5. It's priced under $10 and does most of what it says it will do.

Product Review: TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray

I am sure that most of you are familiar with Ashley of LisaFreemontStreet on youtube and The Lisa Freemont Pages. If you aren't and you want tips on how to get vintage hair, I would certianly check her out. I feel she has the best vintage hair tutorials on youtube and her videos are very simple to follow, making it easy to have vintage hair. Anyways, Ashley swears by her TRESemme Heat Tamer Spray and since she gave it such a great review, I decided I would try it out.

I had been having a difficult time getting my curls from both my hot sticks and my hot roller set to stay throughout the day. Part of the problem is my hair needs a cut, but it really isn't too long that my curls should fall flat as fast as they did. Before using this product, I was using hair spray to set my curls during a hot set. Now that I have found this spray, I will NEVER go back to hair spray again.

I tried the heat tamer spray with my hot roller set first, as it was the worst of the two when it came to my curls falling out. I saw a major difference between using this spray and using hair spray. The curls were much tighter and lasted significantly longer than ever before.

I then tried the heat tamer spray with my hot sticks and this is where I saw the biggest difference. I noted in a few posts back that I now have two sets of hot sticks due to Delta being careless with my luggage. (Note to all: just put then in your carry on!!) I had set my hair with both sets before, but my hair would still fall flat within a few hours. This time I used both sets along with the heat tamer spray and my set lasted all day (in high humidity) and I was able to style my hair the following day which also lasted all day in high humidity. I could have even gone a third day, but didn't want to push my luck! :)

Needless to say, this product gets a 10/10. It is cheap (less than $5), smells great, and does what is says it will. It has now become one of my "can't ever live without beauty products" and my list for those are extremely small.

So gals, check this out if you need some longer lasting curls!

Half Moon Manicure and Product Review

I decided a little while ago that when it came time for me to re-polish my nails, I was going to try something new and a little more vintage. I always have my nails painted, it's very rare that you will see me without polish on. I really feel it is my best accessory. Plus, after years of acrylic nails in high school, it helps keep my nails strong and less prone to breakage. After much thought, I chose to go with a half moon manicure that many ladies sported in the 30s and 40s. I opted not to shape my nails in an almond or oval shape because I don't find it that flattering on my hands and I also chose not to do a white tip.

It was really simple to do, surprisingly. Especially since I haven't ever had much luck with trying to do a French manicure at home. I used the French manicure tips at the base of my nail and did pretty much the same thing Super Kawaii Mama does in her youtube video, which you will find below.

I'd like to point out that I have seen some girls use these Avery reinforcement labels instead of the manicure tips. I think this is a great idea and a much cheaper device to achieve the same look. I know what I will be buying once my tips run out!

I also want to share one of my secrets for keeping nails strong and helping your polish last for more than just a few days. As I mentioned above, I used to have acrylic nails and had then on for about seven years. Two years ago, I decided enough was enough and I went back to a more natural look. It has really taken all two years to get my nails back to a somewhat normal state. Note to self: sometimes our mothers are right! Anyways, I had been having a really hard time keeping the polish adhered to my nails. After only a day or two of painting, the polish would peel right off. I knew I needed a better base coat and after several trials and errors, I believe I have found one of the best ones on the market and one that is actually affordable. ULTA's Silk Wrap Base Coat is seriously AMAZING!!! It's under $7 and definitely does what it says it will do. I can go about a week without having to redo my nails, which is considerably longer than just a day or two. So ladies if you are having the same problem as I was, take note, and go get your self a bottle of this magic potion!

Double Chocolate Mint Cake and a Review

This past weekend was filled with birthdays. On Saturday was a surprise birthday party for my friend Andy and Sunday was my dad's birthday. My other friend was hosting the party at her place, so I offered to make the cake. I took this opportunity to try out some of the cake making stuff I purchased for a cake decorating class that I never got to take because they canceled it. I also wanted to try out doing some cake stuff I had never done before. This included leveling the cakes, using my decorating tools, and experimenting with fondant. All in all, I think things went pretty well, especially since I have never made a double layer cake before and my frosting skills are horrible. I normally pride myself in being a pretty good baker, but cakes have never been one of my specialties. That's why I was so excited this cake came out pretty decent enough to make an appearance on this blog!

The cake itself is chocolate -- I just used a Duncan Hines mix, they are the best and the most moist in my opinion. The frosting is the Wilton brand for decorating, which I didn't find any major differences between this and the cans you get at the supermarket. The little green discs are the fondant, which I made and dyed myself. I don't recommend this, the mess isn't worth it. I would just rather spend the extra $3 and get the ready made stuff. The green frosting was on sale, it was mint flavored. A lot of people said the cake tasted like an Andes Mint.

Okay, so on to my review of the cake leveler. This thing is AMAZING!!!!!!!! I was really skeptical, thinking it wouldn't do what it said it would. It seriously cut through the cake like butter. It's definitely worth the $4 or $5 that it cost. I would get it even if you don't do a lot of baking, it's seriously that good!

If anyone is interesting, I am thinking I might do a post on how I used the leveler, got the cake frosted, and put together. I haven't taken any classes, but learned some things through trial and error on this attempt and would love to share my experience.

Holiday Product Review: Wilton Cookie Press

A few weeks ago, my mom and I spotted this cookie press at Target. I have been wanting a cookie press for a long time and since this one was such a good deal, $9.99, we decided to pick it up and try it out. This past weekend, I got busy and whipped up a batch of Christmas trees to freeze for Christmas. I followed the recipe on the back of the box and swapped out the almond extract for lemon and added a bit more vanilla....I love vanilla!! I also added some green food coloring to make the cookies more festive.

I must say that what you get for ten bucks is nice. There are twelve different disks complete with a Christmas tree and a pumpkin, making this a nice buy for making all different kinds of holiday cookies. The press is nice and sturdy, not what you might expect from a ten dollar buy. Once I started making the cookies, things did not go as smoothly as the box states it will. There is a definite technique to making the cookies come out and it took several tries to make them look acceptable, even for a somewhat experienced baker. Once I got it down, they went onto the cookie sheet like one - two - three!!

The recipe tastes okay. It calls for 3 sticks of butter, which overpowers the taste. It is more of a butter cookie than anything.

Overall, I give this cookie press 8/10. The price is great and is quite sturdy. Target is carrying this press as part of their regular holiday specials that are found in their signature boxes. So if you still need to get some baking done for Christmas, I recommend this press. It takes the stress out of baking!! :)

70th Anniversary Gone with the Wind Box Set Review

I am finally getting around to posting this review!! I wanted to watch all of the extras included in the box set so I could make a fair assessment of this edition of Gone with the Wind. When I found out that this and the Wizard of Oz were going to have 70th anniversary box sets, both available on Blue Ray, I was super excited. When I went out to get the sets (my mom was treating for Christmas) Costco only had the Wizard of Oz on both Blue Ray and DVD; GWTW was only on DVD. Since I already own Wizard of Oz on DVD, I opted to get that one on Blue Ray and just stuck with the DVD version for GWTW. Anyways, to my understanding, both films were rescanned to create the Blue Ray version. I have not yet opened the Wizard of Oz one (my mom is waiting until Christmas for me to open that one), but I will tell you that the picture on GWTW is impeccable, even for just being a DVD.

I had been waiting to replace my VHS version and am so glad I waited for this box set. I have a guilty pleasure of made-for-TV movies and was super thrilled when I found out that included in this box set was the 1980 made-for-TV movie, The Scarlett O'Hara War. I have been trying to locate a copy of that for A LONG TIME!! This made the whole box set worth it, in my opinion. There is also a feature length documentary on 1939, "Hollywood's greatest year." This was very interesting and informative. Three of the five DVDs contained all the extra material and were well put together, giving a lot of information that many may or many not know. It was also nice to take peeks at some of the numerous screen tests. There are many clips of Paulette Goddard and Vivien Leigh, among others.

The box set also contains many of what Warner Bros are calling "collectables." These include ten watercolor reprints of the sets, a 52 page coffee table book, copies of some of the correspondence from David O. Selznick, a reproduction copy of the 1939 program and a "bonus" CD soundtrack sampler. Everything is high quality. My favorite picks are the book and the program. Both have really nice touches and photos, along with some great historical information.

I give this set a 5/5 only because of my made-for-TV movie obsession. The "collector" items are nice, but mine will stay in the box. Someone who isn't a diehard fan could live without all of these and could definitely get away with the older box set for a much cheaper price. I believe this box set cost $46 at Costco, and for me was totally worth it (again because of my NEED for the made-for-TV moive it contained). I also want to note that the packaging it comes it is really superb, complete with velvet exteriors and interiors - it really is a nice presentation.

If anyone has any questions about the set, ask away!!! It's always nice to be able to ask someone who already owns a box set any particulars before they purchase it.

Oh!! These box sets are in limited edition and this time I really believe this is true. Mine is numbered and there were only 10 other sets at Costco when I bought mine and they didn't have anymore in stock (I asked because I was interested in a Blue Ray edition, which no Costco in Michigan has, so if you live in MI you might have to get that online). So, I suggest if you are interested in adding this to your collection to act fast!! :)

Sweater Season and a Product Review

This past weekend I saw two movies I had been dying to see; Pirate Radio and Coco Before Chanel. Pirate Radio was spectacular!!! If you love 60's music and 60's British fashion, I highly suggest you check out that movie. It was super funny and tells a great story. I was less satisfied with Coco Before Chanel. I definitely prefer the Shirley MacLaine's version. I felt that version was a bit more entertaining and showed more of the fashion side to Chanel's life than Coco Before Chanel. However, if you are interested in Coco Chanel I would go see it, the french countryside cinematography was quite beautiful.

I saw Pirate Radio on Friday night and it inspired my Saturday evening look. I got this sweater over the summer at an estate sale for $3 and I have been patiently waiting until colder weather to wear it out.

Saturday I also tried out my Hot Sticks for the second time -- the first time did not go so well. After seeing this video and this video I decided I needed to purchase these and try them out for myself. I got mine through Walmart.com for only $15 (and that's the link if you click on hot sticks above). I did the site to store and it was really nice, and I do recommend that process if you don't need the item ASAP. My second attempt at using them went better, and I probably will get better over time. I did find that they can be a bit difficult to roll your hair on. I think this is because they are so small in diameter and don't really have any groves to help grip the hair and possibly because the rollers get pretty hot in the centers. I also found that my hair got much more frizzy with the Hot Sticks than they do with a wet set. The set I have is a 14 count and does work well, but I would probably recommend the larger 20 count set for girls with longer or really thick hair. The set that I did the second time around lasted over night and into the second day -- which I was really impressed with; especially for a hot roller setting. I think it lasted longer because I sprayed some Lotta Body setting lotion into my hair before drying it and used a little bit of hair spray on each section before rolling. Overall, I give Hot Sticks a thumbs up!! If you use Hot Sticks, leave a comment for any tips or tricks to using them!!

How To Safely Remove Unwanted Odors in Vintage Clothes

I may have mention before just how much I love doing laundry. I really find enjoyment from seeing something that is stained blossom into something clean and completely wearable. This past weekend I attempted something I have never tried before and it was very successful! I thought I would share my tips for safely removing unsightly odors from vintage clothing.

For removing slight odors such as stale smoke, moth balls, and just overall smell from years of storage, I recommend Borax. It been around since 1891 and because of that I feel it's good to use on vintage clothes, since it more than likely was used on the clothes years ago. I also like it because it's natural. I tried it out for the first time a few days ago on a few new items of vintage clothes that had light odors and light stains. I must say, I was greatly impressed. I followed the directions on the back of the box for deodorizing baby clothes and it worked wonderfully. I always do a follow up of a swish in water that has a little bit of Gain softener in it to give the items the fresh laundry smell and to make them soft.

A word of caution: I have read online and my mom has warned against using Borax with other cleaners (such as Shout or OxiClean) other than the laundry detergent because it can have a chemical reaction. The few times I have used it, the directions on the back proved to work the best.

This next tip is my new absolute favorite discovery. A few days ago I found this really great late 40's dress at Mother Fletchers for a steal; the only problem was it reeked of B.O. I had read online on a few different question and answer forums that vinegar would remove the smell. I was a bit skeptical but decided that this dress was the prefect candidate for the experiment.

I first tried the Borax because I wanted to test it up against a tough B.O. It did work to slightly remove the smell, but it still was very overpowering. I made sure that I rinsed the dress well because of the acid-base mix between the Borax and the vinegar.

After rinsing, I made sure the dress was damp, not sopping wet. I read that a solution of 2 parts water and 1 part vinegar worked well in a spray bottle. I mixed up the water in vinegar and sprayed it all over the dress, focusing on the spots were the B.O. was the worst. I let that set in for a few hours, hanging in a cool, dry place. Then, without rinsing, I placed the dress into a tub of water with Gain laundry detergent in it. (I prefer the original scent) I let this soak for the rest of the day and over night.

The following afternoon I rinsed out the dress and rolled the water out of it with a towel and hung to dry. When I went to smell the dress today after it was all dry, I was was amazed that the smell was completely gone. There was also no fading to the dress either.

I was sooooo happy that this worked because I had purchased a dress of eBay and it arrived with a B.O. smell. I was so disappointed because I always make sure and ask before I buy any clothing items online. (The seller said it didn't have any odors). So now that I know this works, the next time I find a great dress I won't shy away from it just because it smells!

Product Review: Max Factor Pan-Stick and Jane Blushing Cheeks

I have seen quite a few product reviews lately both on YouTube and other blogs. I find them very helpful, so I thought I would feature two of my favorite make-up products. Having very fair skin often creates problems when trying to find the right shade of make-up to wear. More times than not, most make-up products are not light enough for my skin tone. This is mostly the problem with foundations products.

Over the years I have tried out a lot of different foundations and last weekend I finally found the BEST product I have ever used. I took a trip to ULTA, which is this really great beauty store (and I can't believe it's been in my area for a little more than a year and just found out about it). Great store, anyways, I picked up this Max Factor Pan Stick because they were all out of the ULTA brand that I was going to try. I must admit, the biggest reason I went with the Max Factor was because it has been around for so long and I feel it's like a vintage product. I've been trying it out for the past few days now and I am super impressed. I have been applying it as a concealer and skipping a foundation (just applying it to the spots that needs it) and it is wonderful!!! It stays on all day and fully covers any red spots all while matching my skin tone. I got the NUDE IVORY shade and it matches very well. This stick was $7.99 and considering how large the stick is, I know it will last me a long time and I will probably never have to try another foundation or concealer product again!

My other favorite product is Jane Blushing Cheeks blush, in Blushing Babydoll. My fair skin also makes it difficult to find blush. Normally all the light colors are bright pinks and that doesn't really go well with my complexion. I found this blush about four or five years ago when I was in high school. I love that it is a darker color and more rosy than pink. It also goes on light and I feel it works well with my light skin and dark hair combination. I don't know how much this one costs, as the last time I bought a tub of blush was at least a year ago, which tells you how long it lasts...and I use it everyday!!

These are my two "can't live without" beauty products!! So if you are looking to try out some new make-up, I high recommend these two products!
