Where you can find me this weekend

This Saturday I will be doing my first "pop up shop" with the Metro Detroit Etsy Team.  I am super excited and almost have my collection put together.  Expect to see lots of fall items, like coats, sweaters, and wool skirts; as well as lots of vintage kids and baby clothes.

So, if you're going to be in the Metro Detroit area this Saturday, stop by the Rust Belt and say hi!

Fall into Some Vintage

Even though the trendsetters have already forecasted what will be in for fall 2013, it's only now that Michigan has started to feel the crisp breeze of autumn.  It seems that many other areas of the US are also experiencing an Indian Summer, so while we are packing away our summer clothes, lets see what modern trends we can sprinkle into our vintage wardrobe.

Here are my five fall trends that lend themselves to vintage dressing:

Velvet
This is a traditional fall staple that has made its way back for yet another season. There is lots of vintage garments out there that are constructed of velvet.  From velvet dresses to velvet tops, there are lots of options to bring some velvet into your wardrobe.  Why not try a jacket with a velvet collar or a 1940s velvet dress with a peplum, another trend for this fall.

Emerald Green

Shades of emerald green seems to be the top fall 2013 trend.  Color trends are normally the easiest way for vintage dressers to look a little less costume-y and a little more modern.  There are lots of emerald green items on etsy, like this 50s dress that's currently in the shop.

Plaids/Classic Patterns
Apparently designers have sought the basics again and plaid and other classic patterns are what's in this season.  I adore the slight pattern mixing on this 50s plaid skirt that's in the shop right now.  But, if that's not your cup of tea, why not try a vintage 49ers jacket (most often found in plaid) or any other item made by Pendleton.

Statement Outerwear
This is one of those trends that I feel really lends itself to vintage.  Almost every single one of my coats are vintage and they are all different; with a key sense of detail and construction.  It was great to see the runways having some fun with outerwear, something you can find with many vintage coats.  I especially love this Lilli Ann coat (which is apart of a set); it also embodies another trend, color/fabric blocking.

Winter White
Wearing white after Labor Day hasn't been a no no for a while now and it was great to see this trend being utilized in more than just coats.  While I love a good off white coat for the fall/winter season, I simply adore this color in dress, such as this 60s wool dress.  These are definitely the new LBD -- where you are dress them up or down.

Quick Vintage Artwork Project

Last week's estate sales yielded this Beatles record for $5.  While it is from 1967, it's not a first pressing, but for $5 I'm not complaining.

Inside, I found this 12" x 12" paper cutout which I instantly fell in love with.  A while back, I had bought a couple record frames from Joann Fabrics and never got around to using them.  (I have a few Beatles record sleeves without the records I thought would make some fun artwork).  This insert fit perfectly inside the frame.  Now to decide where to hang it.  Maybe it will find a home in my studio.

Lately...

Thank you for all the lovely comments on my last lately post!  I'm looking into a different system for comments so I can actually reply to them!

Last week was pretty busy and I didn't get to snap too many photos for instagram, but here's a small look at what my week looked like.

bunches of asparagus at Eastern Market, Detroit

super cool hutch/sideboard spotted while out thrifting

I have been on the hunt for these for maybe close to a decade.  I finally got a set!  It pays to ask if things behind the counter are for sale at the thrift.

Monday was the first fall like day here and I felt it was finally time to put up some decorations

BIG News!

Livin' Vintage Shop is MOVING!!!

That's right!  I'm getting a studio to house the shop.  I am SO excited!

I 've outgrown my space at home, so it's time to move out and move up.

I have so many ideas on how I envision the place -- and this is kind of my mood board for the space.

I love the use of bookcases in Rodellee's old studio, something I plan on implementing in my own space.  I also am in love with these vintage metal desks and am currently hunting one down via craigslist.  If I don't find one by move in, I might just use my 50s yellow formica dinette table that I use in my home office now.  I also really love what Beth did with her studio space; check it out HERE.

Do you have a studio workspace?  What tips or tricks do you use in that space?  Any recommendations?

Meet Vintagers!

Have you guys heard about Vintagers yet?  If not, you need to check it out!  I adore the design of the site -- so cute!!

Vintagers has carved out a corner of the vast interwebs for all vintage lovers alike.  It's a place where you can set up shop to buy and sell vintage items both online and in your area using a geolocation tool.

It's free to join and once you do, you have access to the budding marketplace to both buy and sell online through their website.  Selling seems to work pretty similar to etsy, however there is only a 5% transaction fee and no listing fee.

The "community" section of the website offers much more than just commerce.  Vintagers also offers a place to share your favorite vintage spots in your town, whether it's that great vintage clothing shop down the street from you or the really cool bar that's been around since the 30s you can find these or post them in the "around you" section.

Vintagers is also a great place to make friends and meet new likeminded people.  I unfortunately live in an area were there isn't a huge thriving vintage community so I seek out a lot of that sort of connection through the internet and via this blog.  I am looking forward to what Vintagers has to offer!  What a stellar idea!!
