Sabrina at The Redford

Last weekend, Jesse and I went to see Sabrina (1954) at our local historic theatre, the Redford, which plays classic films all year long. Detroit is lucky to have a few theaters that pay tribute to their past by playing old films. I love that at the Redford, they have the ticket booth outside the theatre. I always feel a bit like I have transported back in time when I there.

You also might have noticed that I have dyed my hair. I had been toying with the idea of going red for weeks, many even months, and I finally took the plunge. I really liked the dye I used and will be posting a review on it soon.

The only jewelry I wore that evening was my newly acquired vintage watch, which I had gotten the day before for the mere sum of $3.75. I always check out the jewelry tables at estate sales because you never know what you will find. I normally don't purchase a lot of jewelry at estate sales because lately they have become quite expensive (anyone else noticing this?). Anyway, I spotted this watch, gave it a quick twist at the side and hear it running, so I figured it was worth the $3 gamble.

To my surprise it kept (and keeps!) really good time. An added bonus was discovered when I was looking on the back for a hallmark to look the watch up online. It said it was 10kt gold face and when I flipped it over to look more closely, I discovered two tiny diamond chips that I didn't notice when I purchased the watch -- they had just looked like part of the scroll work at the time! This is probably one of my best bargains in a while!!

Date Night

On Saturday evening, after a long day of thifting and shopping at Eastern Market, my beau took me to see What Ever Happened To Baby Jane at the Redford. I have to confess, I LOVE campy movies, which is probably something someone with a film degree should not say. ;)

I wore my new smock and I think this is going to be one of my most favorite outfits this spring! It was so comfy and yet I kind of felt a little dressed up. Maybe it was the black pants that was tricking me into feeling this way. I don't have much green in my wardrobe, so I expect to wear this again tomorrow for St. Patty's Day.

Don't forget, tomorrow is Nasty Jello Day!!

A Fun Evening at the Pictures

Saturday, my beau took me to see Arsenic and Old Lace at the Redford Theatre. We decided to treat it like a fancier night out and got dressed up. I have been itching to wear this new sweater, which I scored at a local resale shop for a grand deal of $5. It had two holes in the back and I was able to repair them, although it was not as easy as had hoped it would be. They were only cuts (kinda like slits) but they weren't straight, making the mending process a bit difficult.

The photo above is me standing on the balcony at the Redford. The movie palace was build in 1927-1928 and the owners have restored it to all its old glory. I know the picture doesn't show much, but it sure it pretty inside!

Here you can see more detail of the sweater. It is beaded with faux pearls and yellow seed beads all along the collar and down the front on either side of the buttons and button holes. I don't own many items in yellow (my favorite color) and just had to get this and try to restore it, saving it from becoming part of the garbage mound. In the future, I would like to pair it with a grey dress, but until I find the right one, this black dress will have to do.

My beau is wearing a vintage 70s button down shirt I bought for him and a vintage sweater. I really love that he is into vintage just as much as I am, even if it is different eras of liking. I took the picture myself and kinda cut myself out, but I still think we look cute. ;)

Planes and Air Mail

Lately, it seems that all I have been watching is WWII movies -- classic ones of course! I guess it's getting to me, because I pulled out my sailor dress this past weekend. My friend and I were going out to the Redford to catch Some Like It Hot. I just love that movie; definitely one of funniest films post WWII. If you haven't seen it, you need to go to you're local video rental and get it. I guarantee you'll enjoy it and be laughing the night away! I'm so excited with the film choices for this season at the Redford. They are showing some really great ones, such as Singin' in the Rain and Flying Down to Rio!!!

Don't forget to vote for your favorite film starlet for Film Fashion Friday!!

Feathered Hat

As I mentioned in my last post, I made a last minute change to my costume for the costume night at the Redford. I decided I wanted to wear this dress so I would get a chance to wear these heels and hat, both purchased over the summer. I also felt that the green matched better with my vintage mink stole than the black suit. I didn't take any pictures of myself with the mink on, but its a traditional brown one. If I had kept the blonde mink that I got with the other, I would have probably worn the suit again. Anyways, I love the combination of brown and green, so I was pleased with my outfit. My friend and I were pretty much the only ones who dressed up, but we both had a blast and got many compliments as well!!

The other picture is of the inside of the theatre, right outside of the actual seating and between the lobby. The lobby is closed off by big red doors. The lighting fixture came from Europe and is period but not original to the building. There are three of them hanging and are quite lovely!

As I am writing this post, my finds from the really great estate sale at the historic home are soaking in the laundry tub. I hope to have pictures up soon!!

Costume Night at the Redford

This past weekend was costume night at the Redford theatre. My outfit pictured above is actually from two weekends ago. My friend, Taylor and I didn't know that they had moved the films scheduled for that weekend to this past weekend, so we got all dressed up and drove all the way out there...only to find out the date had been moved. Regardless, I was excited I got to wear this suit. I got it over the summer off eBay and it is probably one of the best deals I have ever gotten on any piece of vintage clothing that I own. The suit with the shipping and handling cost me $8!!!!!!!! It is a perfect fit and a lovely cut...don't ya think??

I ended up wearing a different dress to the actual showing of the films this weekend. Pictures to come!!

The picture next to it is off this lovely website I discovered last week on Amy Jeanne's blog. I suggest you take a look if you are into old photos, but I must warn you...you may be on the site for hours shifting through all the images!! :)

I also attended the most luxurious estate sale at the home that originally belonged to the Kresge family. I am assuming that the home was built around the mid to late 20's and everything was kept just as it was when it was built!! I have some pictures I pulled off the estate sale website that I will share later on this week, along with my finds.

Check and Piping

Two weekends ago, my friend Taylor and I went to see The Blob at the Redford and somehow these pictures never made it onto my blog! I believe I mentioned this blouse and skirt set in my last post. I got it at this fab estate sale two weekends ago. I was so excited to wear it for that night that I rushed home to wash it and have it dry in time for my outing that evening. It's handmade and cut on the bias. The buttons are little clear bows....so adorable!! I fell in love with the collar and just had to have this set. I knew that that weekend would probably be the only chance I would get to wear it since the weather was starting to change. But, living in Michigan...you never know what the day or week will bring. (It was in the 40's today and next week it's suppose to get to the mid 60's) Maybe I will get one more spin out of it before the snow comes!

I love Taylor's coat. She got it at modcloth last winter. Oh...and can you see Pumpkin trying to get into the picture?? :)

Before I end my post, I want to ask all my lovely readers their thoughts on something. I have been thinking about doing a weekly series on my blog in relation to vintage films and the clothing in them. I am thinking about calling it Film Fashion Friday. My idea is to talk about one or more films each week that were made between the 30's and the 60's (with the occasional current day film with period clothing) that have great clothing in them. All of the films that I will use will be available on DVD, VHS, or through Netflix; that way you will have easy access to them if you are interested in viewing them. I want to feature films that don't get talked about a lot, but showcase some really stellar fashions. Let me know what you think. If I get a good enough response I will start the series next Friday.

The Redford and "Dial M for Murder"

Yesterday a good friend and I went to see Hitchcock's "Dial M for Murder" at the Redford Theatre. This theatre is my absolute favorite place to go and see movies. It opened its doors in 1928 and has been showing movies ever since. The picture above is from the Redford's website and it shows what the inside of the theatre looks like. During the time the theatre was built, Asian and Oriental themes were really popular. Many theatres from this time period have hints of this theme in their decor. The Redford has its original organ and is on a system that makes it rise and fall with a touch of a button. A half hour before the show begins, a volunteer plays the organ and then again at intermission. I really enjoy the intermission, it really makes you feel like you are back in time.

I was really excited to see this film. Hitchcock is my favorite director and I love murder mysteries. I have seen this film many times and couldn't wait to see it in 3D. Here's a little history about 3D movies in the 1950's. During the 50's, many families were able to afford television sets in their homes and television stations were obtaining the rights to old films to air on TV for extremely cheep. Both of these events combined caused box office sales to drastically drop. The film companies needed a way to draw back in moviegoers. To bring back high box office sales, films were now being shot using 3D technology and Panavision as gimmicks to draw in audiences. In my opinion, this tactic worked well and still does today. Case in point, my excitement in seeing a movie in 3D that I had seen many times before.

Anyways, I'll leave you with a picture of my outfit. I was really pleased with how it came together, as I was running late and didn't have much time to try out a lot of different options. I really love the blouse I am wearing, there is a funny story behind it. About seven years ago, I found out about Mother Fletchers and have been shopping there for vintage ever since. In all my seven years of shopping there, I have always wanted this shirt. I have no clue how it managed to stay at the store and not go home with anyone. On my last trip to Mother Fletchers, I decided that I had been admiring it long enough and I needed to just buy it, so I did!
