Thoughts.......

Okay vintage gals, I would love to know what your thoughts are on this new music video from Beyonce? I just discovered it and don't really know if I like it or not. Do you think Beyonce is just following the vintage trend at the moment or doing something else? I normally don't watch music videos, but I was really intrigued by this one. All comments welcome! :)

This is really really interesting, Emily! My first thought was that Beyonce embodies the state of "retro" and vintage in the age of Postmodernism where people pick and choose elements they like from different decades and pastiche it together to create something new. My second thought: Beyonce's character in her duet video with Lady Ga Ga has rubbed off on her.

When I was watching the video, I was trying to find a link between the style and the lyrics. I noticed quite a mashup of historical styles in there and allusion to people like Bettie Page and so forth. Maybe there's supposed to be some sort of quasi-feminist statement here about women's roles and lives throughout the twentieth century. I dunno...personally, what I see is marketing: Bettie Page, Mad Men, etc....these have become popular, so by alluding to them, Beyonce is able to capitalize on the connection. I noticed lots of close ups of her powder blue nails and makeup, etc. I sense a MAC line with her as the star coming up ;)

All in all, I also have a feeling that, love her or hate her, Lady Ga Ga is forcing a lot of pop stars to up their "game" and be really edgy and stylish in their looks. This seems like Beyonce going in that direction. Wish the song was as good as some of the outfits in the video.

I'm not a musical critic, but I think Beyonce was just using the retro fashions to make a point for this video. I'm not sure that I've ever seen pics of her in retro fashions. Will be interesting to see, If she actually does take on this fashion statement.

As much as I WANTED to like it, I was too distracted by the cheesiness of some of it. The Bettie Page 're-enactment' spoiled it for me. It just didn't fit in with the song or the rest of the video. Whilst the lingerie was gorgeous, there was just something missing.

Lady B looks gorgeous. and some of those vintagey outfits, fabrics, and prints are to die for. the video was visually entertaining. i loved the turn of the century furnishings and such. But that song-yikes! i'm not smelling a hit here. it's no "single ladies"-not even close.

The song is really, UGH. The video, well...I didn't care for it either. It was almost like the stylist was confused about exactly what vintage/retro era or element they wanted to portray. (And I mix decades all the time, but this was just Ew.) If I was bold, I'd admit I found it tasteless and classless actually. Disappointing! Because I'd love to see Beyonce really work some retro! She's definitely gorgeous and has the body for it!
